“The Book” of the book, by Keith Houston

Booklovers: Keith Houston’s The Book is just a joy. It is a beautiful thing to behold, and consider this a rave about the great cover, beautiful paper stock, lovely typeface, friendly margins, nice use of spot red, and the odd colour image. Also, as you can see on the cover and the title page (below), throughout the text these black lines show key terminology in the book production – head, fore-edge, dingbat, imprint. A nice touch.

As for the content. It’s a thoroughly research and well-written exploration of four elements which comprise the physical object of the book: page, text, illustrations and form. Papyrus, illuminated manuscripts, Coptic binding, it’s all in here, and I learnt things from this book that I hadn’t read elsewhere. Highly recommended for lovers of the book as form and communication tool.
