We were very sad to hear of the early death of Australian author, Gillian Mears, at the age of 51 from MS. She has long been a favourite of Fairfieldbooks staff, from her first novel, The Mint Lawn, winner of the 1990 Australian/ Vogel Award, to her glorious final novel, Foal’s Bread, published in 2011 and winner of the Prime Minister’s Literary Award. (See here for Heather’s review of Mears’ Foal’s Bread.) Her final publication was the children’s book The Cat with the Coloured Tail, and the short-story collection Fineflour (1990) even won a fan in this non-short-story reader.
Gillian Mears’ works are beautifully written, sensitive to human relations and confusions, and deeply embedded in the Australian landscape — particularly her native North Coast of NSW. Her fine writing will be missed.
