A few years ago Andy Mulligan wrote Trash which has the unusual setting of a dumpsite. Three boys make a living by sorting through the rubbish and selling what they can salvage. When Raphael finds something mysterious and potentially valuable, his life is in for some changes. And some danger.
With terrific characters, moral dilemmas and themes of poverty and the environment, it isn’t surprising that schools have had lots of class rooms reading Trash. However, it isn’t just a ‘worthy’ book that children won’t enjoy reading. It’s terrific, and I can see how it will make a good film. Highly recommended. Paperback, $18
