The Our Australian Girl series has been going for a couple of years, and they are hugely popular with girls between 8-12 years old. Schools also love them because they each girl is set in a different time period and over four books for each character, a child can learn a lot about the historical setting. This approach is a very painless way for children to learn about other times, but also with a character they get to know and love. Not surprisingly, Alice Pung’s girl is a refugee. Called Marly, she is living in Sunshine in 1983 and she just wants to fit in and not be noticed. But it isn’t easy.
There are currently two Marly books out, with two more to come a bit later in the year.
We love the Our Australian Girl series at Fairfieldbooks, and if your daughter or niece hasn’t seen them yet, I’m sure she will too. They are $15 each.
