Special thanks to our customer Chris who did this word cloud for us.
National Bookshop Day Saturday August 11th.
Last year we had the first National Bookshop Day in Australia and it was an opportunity to focus on the value of shops in local communities. It’s on again this year on Saturday August 11th and we have a fun day planned. We have a line-up of authors here from 10am until 2.30 who will be out in the street talking about reading and books. There will also be a magic show with Geoffrey McSkimming to help launch his new book Phyllis Wong and the forgotten secrets of Mr Okyto. We will have cupcakes, quizzes and giveaways.
Last year we asked people to write on the shop window the name of their favourite book which brought out the graffiti artist in lots of people. We will be doing something similar this year., but you will have to wait and see exactly what we are doing.
The shop will be open 9-5 as usual and we will have raffle tickets for anyone who buys a book on the day. Prizes will be books and book vouchers.
Come along and help up celebrate bookshops and reading. The world would be much the poorer without both of those things, so pop in during the day. and check out what’s going on. See below for the authors and their appearance times.
Tony Wilson 10-10.45
Jen Storer 10.30-11.30
Michael Pryor 11-12
Deborah Robertson 12-1pm
Fran Cusworth 12.30-1.30
Geoffry McSkimming 1-2
Kylie Ladd 1-2
Zana Fraillon 1.30-2.30
We plan to have a lot of fun, so come on down and join us for a while.
Writing Workshops with Archimede Fusillo
In something very new for us we are hosting two writing workshops with author Archimede Fusillo. They are over two evenings, Wednesday August 15th & 22nd, 7-9pm. They are for adults who have either started writing fiction and want to learn some new skills and at total beginners.
Archie is best known as a writer for children and young adult books but he is also a skilled presenter and teacher. His books, The Dons and Last of the Braves in particular have been very well regarded by many judges of children’s books. He will be able to help you hone your skills, no matter what sort of fiction you are interested in writing.
$80 for both sessions. Bring your own writing materials.
Book and pay at the shop.

Australian Women Writers 2012 Challenge
This year I am taking the Australian Women Writers 2012 Challenge. I am going in as a dabbler meaning I will be reading in more than one genre, and at the Franklin-Fantastic level which means reading 10 books. The aim is to raise the profile and level of reviewing books written by Australian women. I’m working on the list of books I’m going to read and review on this blog and I’m also going to be catching up with some classics that I’ve somehow missed reading. All in all, lots of books and lots of reading coming up. I’ve already started, and my first book written by an Australian women to be reviewed is Kirsten Tranter’s A common loss. My first classic for the year was Frankenstein. More on both later. I’m looking forward to it
