Lament (PB $20) is the story of Dee, a talented but nervous harpist and part-time ice cream scooper. She also happens to be a cloverhand – a human who can see faeries. In between bouts of stage fright and despite her mother’s strict rules, Dee is blown away when she meets the irresistible Luke. What with the continuous stream of four leaf clovers and mysterious iron jewellery that follow him, it doesn’t take Dee long to figure out there is something otherworldly, something sinister afoot. Luke is forbidden to tell Dee anything about himself but as Dee discovers her incredible gifts, the pair realise he doesn’t have to. Unbelievable though it is, Dee can simply read Luke’s mind. But perhaps delving into a past, a world, like Luke’s is not such a good idea…
This new series, Books of Faerie, from Maggie Stiefvater is sure to keep fans of her best-selling The Wolves of Mercy Falls Trilogy [Shiver (PB $20), Linger (HB $30), with Forever to come] more than happy!

Dan is 15 and his world has changed dramatically. His dad has left, he has had to move house and change schools, and everything seems to be out of control. Dan tries to focus on just ‘Six Impossible Things’. He is a lovely character and his crush on the lovely Estelle next door is just one of the impossible things he is dealing with.
This is suitable for both girls and boys 14up. (Don’t let the boys be put off by the pink on the cover.) Highly recommended. $17
For your shopping pleasure and convenience, we at Fairfield Books are opening our doors for a little longer in the week leading up to Christmas. From Monday 20th to Thursday 23rd, we will be open from 9am to 7pm.
If you are looking for a gift for someone who likes the outdoors, this deck of cards might be worth considering. Published in November by Explore Australia, who know a thing or two about maps and guide books, the card deck has a different walk on each card. They vary in difficulty, and describe who each walk is suitable for, and what will be seen on each walk. The length and how long each walk will take is also covered. In a neat package, this will fit into a bag or the car glove box easily. A terrific idea. $24.95
