Meg runs away from home, away from the pain, the loss and parents who don’t seem to care. She is all alone until she stumbles across a once grand manor house, home to the blind Marguerite and her haunting owls. Meg finds a place there but doesn’t quite feel comfortable until she meets Tom, a boy who lives off the land and on his own terms. Meg is jealous of his freedom and as Tom helps her let go of the guilt she carries in her heart, Meg learns to depend on him. They plan to go travelling together, however, once the shutters are thrown open, Meg finds the manor house and Marguerite much more welcoming. As she discovers Tom has a secret he refuses to share, Meg starts to wonder if Marguerite should be the one she depends upon.
Set circa 1800, The Runaway by Angela McAllister (PB $17) is a beautiful story about Meg’s journey to find herself after she has lost someone she cares about.
